here here! it is the commercial love holiday of the year!
it’s controversial, yeah? but, you know, i don’t hate the base messaging of this holiday, if we could remove the other pressures that come along with it. because there are many ways and many people we can express our love to. it doesn’t have to be one person and it doesn’t have to be that person. it can be our friends, it can be the trees, it can be our animals, and ourselves. and it doesn’t have to involve grand gestures, money, or gifts at all. all it really requires is presence.

today, in the throes of winter’s frosty tundra, i wanted to highlight our moisturizing, nourishing face oil
sub rosa
𖦹
sub rosa was born from a desire to create my own facial moisturizer that was simple and effective, luscious and sweet.
i had been using a rose oil from a big manufacturer for several years that never quite felt like it hit the spot. it left my skin in a state of either producing too much oil in less than ideal areas or never quite addressing my overall sense of dryness, especially during dry winters. it was like a mask for “moisture” - never actually getting deep enough to address my issues. i’d tried several other face oils and lotions, from reputable “plant-based” companies, mostly unable to escape the use of essential oils (which would dry my skin out further), and finally came to the conclusion that i needed to make my own.
::
there are endless plants that are great for our skin, but when it came down to it i knew i wanted to keep the formula as simple and effective as possible.
there was no doubt in my mind that rose would be a main component - a plant that is rich in antioxidants and offers wonderful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. rose aids in calming irritated skin, helps shield against sun damage and hyperpigmentation, and locks moisture into our skin so we don’t have to keep reapplying.
chamomile was my second plant of choice. chamomile is so unassuming! but this plant is so well-rounded and gentle in its care for our bodies and skin. it aids in cell and tissue renewal, contains antibacterial properties that combat acne, and is abundant in antioxidants.
finally, st. john’s wort - one of my favorite skin healers. when extracted in oil, this plant helps draw out heat, heal the appearance of scars, and fight bacteria-causing acne.
combined with healing oils of jojoba, olive, and rosehip seed, we have a soothing, wholesome moisturizer made with organic plants and essences of native flora.
we have sub rosa.
if this feels like the softness your skin needs, i hope you’ll give it a try. & here’s a little gift for you: use code ROSA to get 10% off now through this weekend.
